Rio Neighborhood Guide

Copacabana

Art-nouveau architecture, sophisticated boutiques, and glamorous nightlife.

Before the end of the XIX century, Copacabana was little more than a fishing village, isolated from the rest of Rio. However, around 1900, improvements in local infrastructure paved the way for development.

The building of Avenue Atlantica and the opening of the Copacabana Palace hotel in 1923 transformed the neighborhood into the glamorous and eclectic neighborhood it is today.
