Touring one of Rio’s most infamous favelas is both an eye-opening and humbling experience. Our socially conscious tour is designed to show you the very best of Rocinha, home to over 300,000 people. On our tour of Rocinha, you’ll get a firsthand view into the thriving and dynamic life inside a neighborhood often ignored by the millions of visitors to Rio each year.
Rocinha, the largest favela in all of of Latin America, went through its first expansion in the 1940’s, when workers from Bahia left the impoverished northeastern part of Brazil to settle in Rio. As housing prices skyrocketed in the rest of Rio, the downtown workers headed to the hills of Rio to build their simple structures made from concrete and wood.
Rocinha rebirth began in 2008, when it went through pacification by the (then) mayor or Rio de Janeiro. Almost overnight, much of the gang and drug violence dissipated and crime was dramatically reduced. Today, most of the residents of the complex and fascinating Rocinha favela have electricity, large screen televisions, and access to internet. You’ll visit the thriving markets, experience a local capoeira school, and take in one of the most awe-inspiring views in all of Rio.
